Alyssa Springs is the owner of Flow Motion, a wellness sanctuary in Ferndale, Washington. Alyssa brings love & passion to her business that is welcomed by her students & clients. An artist, traveler, business owner & optimist at heart, the seeds of Flow Motion were planted while Alyssa was earning her degrees in Business Administration & International Politics from Penn State. Naturally curious, Alyssa stumbled upon, quite by accident, a wonderful opportunity to learn about different parts of the world by exploring a culture’s dance & music outside of college textbooks. It was this opportunity, a non-credit bellydance class, which allowed Alyssa to discover her passion for dance. The class revitalized a love of Egypt that Alyssa had always felt since she was a child. Hesitant about signing up for the class, Alyssa enlisted “backup” from a college roommate who agreed to signed up for the class with her. Alyssa started dancing on that first day of class & hasn’t stopped dancing since.

After college, dance remained a hobby for Alyssa while she began her new career with the federal government. Her fiancé was transferred to Mississippi, so Alyssa resigned from her job. She was insecure about the scarce job market on the post-Hurricane Katrina Mississippi Gulf Coast. Shortly after moving, Alyssa became aware of a local bellydance festival that was being held at a cultural arts center. She signed up to perform at the festival & during that performance she was inspired to take her passion of dance to a different level. Alyssa decided to become a business owner & do what she was compelled to do: become a professional bellydancer of course!

Gulf Coast Bellydance

The south was surprisingly welcoming of bellydance & Alyssa went from teaching one bellydance class a week at a local yoga studio to teaching several classes a week in several different cities in only a matter of a few months. As local interest grew, Alyssa felt compelled to create who her own unique space for her students…& Gulf Coast Bellydance was born. Alyssa opened the first commercial bellydance studio in Mississippi in Ocean Springs, the artsy community of the Gulf Coast.

Gulf Coast Bellydance hosted several Hafla’s (Middle Eastern dance parties), held fundraising events that raised thousands of dollars for local charities, brought world famous bellydancers to Mississippi to hold workshops & helped to grow the bellydance community by giving the ability to experience bellydance to those who had never had the opportunity to experience it before. Alyssa expanded her studio to offer other types of cultural dance classes, drum classes & also began to offer fitness-based bellydance classes as well as ZUMBA® FITNESS classes.

Unfortunately, at the peak of its success, Gulf Coast Bellydance closed its doors as work forced Alyssa’s husband to transfer yet again. Closing Gulf Coast Bellydance was one of the toughest things Alyssa has ever had to do, especially after it had become such an enjoyable & welcoming place for women on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Having only spent two years in Mississippi, it still feels like home when Alyssa returns to teach workshops or to visit. It’s the people that make the place!

Flow Motion studio is founded

After arriving in Bellingham, Washington, Alyssa didn’t waste any time & dove right into her new business just two weeks after the moving boxes were unpacked. Flow Motion was created to bring the same experience to the women of the Pacific Northwest that she had mastered in the south. Alyssa attended multiple dance intensives & received certifications to instruct Hot Hula Fitness® & INSANITY. Alyssa continues to strive to make Flow Motion a business with a strong sense of community by offering cultural experiences through dance, a way for students to improve their health through fitness & new ways for them to achieve optimal well-being through essential oil classes.
